Various methods on how to thaw / unfreeze a frozen water pipe.

With the recent extreme cold weather in the Northeast, you are probably now past preventing a pipe from freezing and are hopefully looking for a solution to get the water running again rather than a plumber to fix a burst pipe. I too am was in this situation. I have a 6 foot section of shower and tub frozen in a wall. If your pipe has not burst (yet). I combed the interwebs and compiled here various methods you can do to unfreeze / thaw frozen pipes or at least prevent the pipe from bursting. As with any DIY project use common sense especially when working with heaters and heat generating tools.

Open the faucet
I am guessing you found out that the pipe is frozen because the water does not come out of the faucet or does so slowly. Leave the faucet open. If it is dripping slowly, leaving it open may solve the problem. The slowly moving water will not freeze and can eventually move the frozen water. keep a faucet dripping in the future to prevent the pipe from freezing. You can also turn off the water main to the house. And open a faucet lower than the one that is stuck.

Add Heat to the Area
If the pipes run through unconditioned unheated space, add heat. You can so this by:

  • An oil immersion space heater
  • An Infrared heaters will warm an area directly.
  • Opening a door from a heated space and adding a basic fan to blow hot air into the cold space.
  • Use a kerosene heater. Available to rent from Home Improvement stores and tool rental companies.

Add heat directly to the pipe.
If the pipe is in a basement or crawlspace, you can add heat to the space that the pipe is in.

  • Use a hairdryer pointed at the wall where the pipe is.
  • Use a heat gun (Hairdryer on steriods)
  • Propane blowtorch is usually not recommended. You can met the solder at the joins causing a leak or set fire to the surrounding area.
  • cover the pipe with warm wet towels
  • open the termination of the pipe and pour hot water in.

Expose the pipe to warm air.

  • Get access to the pipe. I was able to remove the shower mixing valve cover. This small access solved the problem after 24 hours of a space heater in the bath was unsuccessful. I unscrewed the two screws holding it on. I did not remove completely otherwise the bracket inside would have fallen into the wall.
  • Cut open a section of drywall and add heat. repair drywall is a lot less expensive that repair a broken pipe along with the associated water damage.

Insulate the area.
Of course you may have wished you insulated prior to the problem. As a preventative measure there are foil backed insulation tape and insulation pipe “noodles”. There are also heat cable tape products that you plug in to a standard electrical outlet. Some of these come with automatic thermostat. But what about right now? Is cold air blowing in that  was not issue before. Maybe there is a gap you did not notice, or one opened up. Look for daylight coming in. Feel around for cold air blowing in. I had this problem a 1/8 gap by the garage door. Air was blowing in and that was enough to freeze the hot and cold water supplies as well as the bath sewer drain. replacing with a new 2×4 solded the problem. You could use insulation batts, spay insulation in a can, plywood or 2x4s to seal a hole or gap.

If you do not have the proper tools, try a tool sharing / tool lending library or rent from a Home Improvement stores or tool rental companies. You can even try to buy the tool on craigslsit and then later resell if you no longer have the need. I hope this information is helpful. Let me know in the comments if you have any other solutions or suggestions.

You never know what you can find in a storage unit.

The case of Vivian Maier via  vivianmaier.com

vivian_maier_packed_storage_locker

One of Vivian Maier’s storage lockers via vivianmaier.com

It started with a search for vintage photos and a chance purchase.
Moved to a wordpress blog with no visitors ( like this one).
Upgraded to a kickstarter campaign to make a documentary
And along the way ended up saving part of an unknown photographers history and photographs from going into the trash from a storage unit.
“It’s almost as if she left a perfectly arranged puzzle to be put together after her death.”

FYI that does not look like a “(packed) storage locker”. The unit appears to be half or three quarters full.  If you do not need to access the items frequently she probably could have used one unit. And these units may have been used for years.  Note the North American Moving boxes in the picture of the storage room appear to be the sturdiest ones.

Turn a Rear Projection TV into a 2000ºF death ray.

Finally a use for huge rear projection Televisions – 2000 degree death ray.

It usually does not sense to move these monster and definitely does not make sense to repair them. I often see them on the side of the road or have them offered to me on moving estimates. Inside is a death ray AKA a Fresnel lens. This can be used to focus the sun’s rays to a focal point. Also inside are some other interesting items that could be salvaged: optics Speakers, plexiglass, etc. You could mention this to a prospective new owner when you plan to get rid of unwanted items before you move.

Is amazon going to send UPS and FedEx the way of the bookstore?

Sounds like Dominos Pizza Redux but it is a real Amazon project. Octocopter drones making deliveries in 30 minutes or less give a whole new meaning to air mail.

New devices & apps in the world of keys and locks

Often one of the first things you do after you move in, (or even on the day you take possession) is change your locks.

You would think that much like the wheel there isn’t much new under the sun. Here are some new cool tech options for getting in and out of your home or apartment.

If you can’t be at home and want a mover to do a physical onsite, you can provide the salesperson with a temporary code to do a physical walk through. Occasionally on the day of the move, the mover will get to your new home before you do. You can have the crew start unloading by unlocking remotely with an app, or with a temporary code on an electronic lock. You will usually need to be present at the beginning or end of a move to sign paperwork. If as part of your move you have that one piece going 200 miles away on another day, don’t spend hours driving just to turn a key. There’s now an app for that or a new piece of tech.

  • key.me  1-888-380-0394 / support@key.me a new NYC based startup. You can scan your physical keys with an app and store it in the cloud for free. If when you get locked out, you can go to a kiosk (currently in Manhattan only) and have a new key, keyed right there. They call it a digital keychain, but basically it’s on demand printing from the cloud for your keys in a local kiosk for $20 vs $200 for a locksmith visit. You can also make a copy you physically have in hand at the kiosks for under $6 or if you wait they will mail you a copy of your key for $4 to $7 or even allow you to have a locksmith make a new key with the saved data for $10. This could be useful for agents showing homes and apartments. If the agent is near a kiosk uptown and the key is at the office downtown. You can have your new key in 30 seconds. Not even a double rush NYC bike messenger can beat that time.

  • lockitron.com hello@lockitron.com With the internet and an an app you can now (almost) be like Captain Kirk walking onto the bridge of the Enterprise. The lockitron attaches to the inside of your door and physically turns the deadbolt. You can have it unlock the door as you approach it or lock and unlock it anywhere in the world. $179 for preorder in Fall 2013. Great for airbnb landlords and real estate agents. If you can’t be at home and want a mover to do a physical onsite, you can unlock the door for the salesperson to do a physical walk through when they arrive at your door.

  • Electronic Locks You can rekey your lock, or install anew lock and deadbolt. There are some new smarthome tech options and techie non internet connected options at you local home improvement store. You can use a push button access with different codes, or a fingerprint scanner. There are non internet connected devices and they run on batteries in case of a power outage. 100 choices at Lowes prices range from $70 to $400. 126 choices at Home Depot prices range from $70 to $500.

One more thing to worry about when you are moving.

There is so much going on when you are moving. Packing, choosing a mover, lawyers, closings.

And apparently in Romania, you need to worry about gangs tailgating your moving truck. And then proceed ala James Bond style open the rear door and have a look inside. They apparently will go to great lengths to feed their TV, nicotine and caffeine addictions.
